Fonts are far more than just letters on your website, document, or marketing campaigns. Fonts communicate vital information to the readers which can increase your chances of attracting the readers to be a frequent reader of your website or converting the reader into a customer through Advertisement campaigns. For any individual or any company the well crafted typography captures the attention of the reader which also reinforces the company’s brand image.
In this article we would be discussing the Different types of fonts which would make the content readable and appealing and also the major differences between a font and a typeface which is often used interchangeably.
Types of Fonts
There are various categories of fonts which vary from simplistic to jazzy fonts. Each category of fonts has its own historical and technical definitions. But our focus in this article would be more on the 4 basic font categories that would be useful to the readers when they design any project , create documents or for any marketing campaigns.
1) Serif :
Serifs are small decorative fonts that flourishes to make letters and symbols. They’re generally depicting serious or traditional look. An example would be the Times New Roman font. The other few serif fonts are Clarendon (less geometric slab serif), Rockwell (more geometric slab serif), Bodoni (modern serif).Adobe Garamond (old-style serif).
2) Sans-Serif :
“sans-serif” literally means “without” serif. Prior to the expression “sans-serif” got to be distinctly regular in English typography, various different terms had been utilized. One of these outdated terms for sans serif was gothic, which is still utilized as a part of East Asian typography and in some cases found in textual style names like Century Gothic, Highway Gothic, or Trade Gothic.The other few examples of sans-serif are Avenir, Open sans, Calibri etc.
3) Script :
Script fonts are fonts which are cursive in nature or one can call them as handwriting style fonts. They generally have connecting letters. The different script fonts can be elegant, hand drawn or casual in nature. Examples of script fonts are cursive, calligraphy, brush script, tattoo, Swashes.
4) Decorative :
They are often used to seek the attention of the readers. They’re often more unusual than practical and they should only be used in small doses and for a specific effect or purpose. Generally these are used for display advertisements to attract more audience towards their brand.
Typefaces v/s Fonts : What’s the Difference ?
Usually the two terms typefaces and fonts are used interchangeably but technically and historically they are different. Few definitions about the two might help in better understanding the difference.
The typeface is the design whereas the font is how the design is delivered. A typeface is what we see and a font is what we use. Fonts are the digital representations of typefaces, and we can change either with a simple click on your computer screens. The unique style or design of the alphabet that we identify by name — say, Times New Roman, would be considered the typeface. When those letters are needed to be put at a particular size or weight (12 pt bold, for example), that would be considered a particular font. So 12 pt. Bodoni bold and 22 pt. Bodoni italic would be two different fonts, but the same typeface.
