Startup Talky

Hi Guys, Today we are in conversation with Mr. Rishav, Founder at Just like its name the problem which this startup solves is also unique. It provides you all the basic amenities that you may need for your accommodation. I think we all face this problem while relocation but surprisingly no one ever tried so solve that!

Rishav, Let’s first know about your startup.

Boriya Bistar is about revolutionizing the way you look at relocation! We aim in providing you ‘boriya bistar’, a simple bag of the basic amenities that you need for your accommodation. We all know that home is the place where you not only live, but also feel that you belong to. So why just have a new address, why not make it a home? And here we are! The one stop shop to tick off your relocation checklist. We have a range of options from bedding, linen, towels to crockery and bath ware. Our products are exclusively handpicked and made into a bundle (cluster) to help you find the best quality available at the lowest prices, allowing you to set your home in one click. And even better, we deliver in as quick as 24 hours.

How did you come up with this idea?

When we founders, shifted to college hostels for our graduation, we had to undergo the same routine which was really troublesome. So we always had a feeling that there is a major gap in this sector. Hence the idea was conceived and became a reality in April’16.

How did you come up with the name of your Startup?

We banged our heads day in and day out for the same. We were looking for very basic relatable term. And Boriya bistar is again complementary to 3 basics of life ie ROTI, KAPDA AND MAKAAN.

What did you do just after getting the idea?

We were working with different companies at that time. Then soon we all quit and started with a pilot project in and around Indiranagar, Bangalore and the response was really motivating to startup.

Tell us about your business model?

We work on both B-B and B-C models. We have a huge online customer base and clocking a good number of orders every day. Also repeat orders are increasing MoM. Apart from this, we have tie-ups with few of the major PG and Home Rental startups. We furnish the entire property at one go for them. We have exclusive tie-ups with College hostels in and around Bangalore.

What is your revenue model?

Online sales and B-C tie-ups. We are coming up with a never seen new vertical for startups. Watch out for this space.

How did you acquire your initial customers?

Our very first customer was a young naive college joinee who had no clue about the city. He was scared with the entire system of hostel and stuff. So we set up his hostel room before he even landed in the city. It was very fulfilling for us to see him settle with ease.

What options do your customers have? And how are you different from them?

Firstly, our bundles are divided into 3 segments depending on the budget of our customers. They can choose the basic bundle at just 2250 with free delivery. It compromises of mattress, linens and set of 20 other products which is more like a starter kit. Secondly, you can customise your own mattress which will be tailor made for you. You can choose the thickness, type of cotton blend etc according to your liking. Then you can also schedule the delivery according to your itinerary.

What was the most challenging part of your journey till now and how did you overcome it ?

Customer acquisition looks a tough nut to crack especially when you are a bootstrapped startup. We followed all conventional and non-conventional methods of marketing. I won’t say we have cracked it but yeah gradually we are getting a good organic customer flow

How did you meet your team(co-founders) and what is their background?

We all were classmates during our engineering days. We all are engineers from PESIT. I have worked with Accenture, Shubham Jain was working with HP, Ashwin Agarwal with Deloitte and Kanak for NTT Data.

Where do you want to see your startup in the next 3 year?

We will be operational in 1 more city by May end. Next 3 years we will be operational in at least 10 major metropolitan cities and also have our own manufacturing line.

What entrepreneurial hacks/online tools/ services/ apps do you use to stay focused and keep your day productivity?

I read a lot of online journals for startups and business hacks. So get a lot of insights on starting up. For mails, we use a lot of MailChimp. Initially, before going full fledge with our website we started out with Shopify as a cost saving alternate.

Any suggestion/quote that you would like to share with budding entrepreneurs?

Move fast and break things. Unless you are breaking stuff, you are not moving fast enough. I think as the clock is ticking for everyone we need to move fast take swift decision and act.

What do you look for in a candidate who aspires to join your company?

A Person has to be really smart to look beyond the obvious. He should work and take responsibility as if he owns the show and good sense of humor is an add-on.

What are your strategies to build awesome work culture in your company?

We don’t have cubicals at our office. So anyone is free to talk to anyone without an appointment. We don’t follow any hierarchy structure. All the employees are on the same page. Together we all work as founders with a vision to solve a larger problem.
